Lent 2009 (39) – The gateway to life

…don’t you know that all of us who were baptised into Christ Jesus were baptised into his death? We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life. If we have been united with him in a death like his, we will certainly also be united with him in a resurrection like his… Now if we died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him. Romans 6:3-5,8

Paul compares Jesus’ death and burial with baptism. When we were baptised it was “into his death”. And just as Jesus’ death is the gateway to resurrection, so our baptism is the gateway to new life. This is vividly seen in a believers’ baptism service when the candidates enter the water down one flight of steps (leaving the old life behind), are immersed in the water (buried), and emerge up another flight of steps (entering the new life).

The cross – was it worth it? Yes – it is the gateway to life.
