Lent 2009 (21) – Growing up

We must no longer be children, tossed to and fro and blown about by every wind of doctrine, by people’s trickery, by their craftiness in deceitful scheming. But speaking the truth in love, we must grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ, from whom the whole body, joined and knitted together by every ligament with which it is equipped, as each part is working properly, promotes the body’s growth in building itself up in love. Ephesians 4:14-16

Paul wants us to give up following the latest fads because they don’t last and they can lead us astray. His answer is that we should grow up. It isn’t just that we should be a bit more mature and less childish. We grow up into Christ who is our head. He is our leader, our guide, our shepherd.

The church is a community but it is not just a lot of individuals. It is a body in which each part is equipped by Jesus and knit together. When it works properly it grows up as one body and it is built up by love. And so when it feels like the world is against us and we don’t know where to turn, then let us turn to one another. Let us focus on love – of God and of neighbour – and then we will grow together into Christ who is the way, the truth and the life.
