Lent 2009 (20) – Fully devoted to him

O Lord, open my lips, and my mouth will declare your praise. For you have no delight in sacrifice; if I were to give a burnt-offering, you would not be pleased. The sacrifice acceptable to God is a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise.
Psalm 51:15-17

The Psalmist knows that God is not interested in empty rituals. If there is no real sorrow or contrition for what we have done wrong then a confession is more than useless. God will not delight in it. If we go through the motions and think that is enough then we will be disappointed.

God desires for us to open ourselves to him. We should be honest about our inability to save ourselves from who we are. We can never pull ourselves up by our own boot-straps. We need help. We need God. And if we come to him in that spirit then he can work with us. There’s not much he can do until we acknowledge our need of his aid.

That’s why a broken spirit leads to transformation.

A helpful thought from Trish:“Sometimes recognition that we have chosen to do the wrong thing starts as head knowledge but can move on to true repentance as we ask God to show us how He feels about it and give us the appropriate feelings and understanding of our own wrong actions and what he wants of us as a result.”
