My Lent Words 25: How Marvelous?

The Hebrew word pele means ‘marvelous’. There is no Hebrew word for supernatural or miraculous, but pele means beyond normal expectation. Jonathan’s love for David is described using this word.

‘I grieve for you, Jonathan my brother; you were very dear to me. Your love for me was wonderful,…’ (2 Samuel 1:26)

‘The stone the builders rejected has become the capstone; the Lord has done this, and it is marvellous in our eyes.’ (Psalm 118:22,3)

The transformation of the rejected stone is something that the Lord has done and it is pele – amazing, marvelous, wonderful and then some. If we were political or sports commentators we would be talking about an amazing comeback.

‘For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counsellor, Mighty God, Everlasting father, Prince of Peace.’ (Isaiah 9:6)
