There is a load of advice out there about how to use btconnect as a mail relay or smarthost.

This is my experience.

1. Contact BT and ask them to register your domain so you can use their smtp server as a mail relay. The agent I spoke to completely understood what I wanted and the relay was operative in a few minutes. Contact BT SUPPORT on 0845 600 7020 and request to have mail relay set up for you. If the domain name is registered in a different name from your BT Business account you need to send BT proof that you are entitled to use it:

a copy of the domain name registration certificate

a copy of the invoice from the domain name registrar

permission from the domain name owner provided on company headed pape

Our domain name and admin address matched our business name and address so I don’t need to send any proof..

2. I changed my DNS to point my existing outgoing.domainname to point to mail.btconnect.com, But I imagine you could use mail.btconnect.com as the mail server address in Exchange server,.

3. Everyone says that you need to change the authentication in Exchange server smtp connector. This is logical because a normal account needs this to work. BUT I found that the smtp smarthost connector DOES NOT need authentication for BT servers. USE anonymous access instead and it works perfectly.

According to The Atlantic, 90% of computer users don’t know what Ctrl+F can do.

Control+F is the keyboard shortcut for the Find command. If you’re in a web browser and want to search text on a web page, pressing Control+F will bring up a search box. Just type in that search box and it’ll locate the text you’re typing on the page. Control+F may work in other applications, too, when you need to find something. For example, Microsoft Word and other word processing applications use this keyboard shortcut.

Control+N is the command for creating something new. In a web browser, this will make a new window. In a word processing, image editing, or other document-based application this keyboard shortcut will create a new document.

Control+S is the keyboard shortcut for saving a document. If this is the first time you’ve saved the document you’ll be presented with a new window that’ll ask you what to name it and where you want to save it. If you’ve already saved it once before, this keyboard shortcut will simply save your changes.

Control+P is the keyboard shortcut that will open the print window. From there you’ll be able to check your settings, choose a printer, etc. When you’re ready, just click print and your document will be printed. This keyboard shortcut works in pretty much any application with printable content, including your web browser.

Alt-F4 is the keyboard shortcut for quitting the current application. In Windows it will quit the currently open that’s in focus on the screen.

The enter key is useful for a lot of things. When a dialog window pops up and asks you to press okay or cancel, you can usually just press Enter instead of clicking okay. In Windows you can tell which button will respond to enter because it’ll have a dotted box inside of it. Enter can also be used for other things, like submitting forms on web pages from any text field in that form.

I’m a massive fan of Firefox and have been for since version 1 back in 2004. I’ve been using 4.0 in beta for what seems like ages. Where’s the RSS web feeds subscription button gone?

The new design of this button isn’t great either, It uses extra space and it is present in the toolbar at all times. The button is black when an RSS feed is present and grey otherwise. Ironic, since Firefox invented the orange icon!

How to add the button to the tool bar?

By default the new RSS web feeds subscription button is not even visible. To add this to the toolbar just right-click on the toolbar and select customize. In the customize tool bar window that appears, click and drag the “Subscribe” icon to the desired location. Done.

I’m a big fan of Windows Live Writer. I use it all the time for my blogging. Microsoft have just released the 2010 beta which now has a cracking Office 2007/2010 feel to it, including the ribbon bar. It is much easier to see layouts and the HTML styles. Definitely worth the upgrade.

Also included, if you so choose, is Windows Live Photo Gallery, Movie Maker, Mail, and several more useful apps. Just watch out you don’t download want you don’t need!

I especially like the new Outlook Connector Pack. It added what’s called the "People Pane" to my Outlook 2007. That in turn integrates social networking (although FaceBook isn’t yet available, but coming soon) but better, it aggregates all messages from a sender under the preview pane and when you open an email. A very convenient option and similar to Xobni, which I never took to.

Under the "Forms" tab of the properties of the shared folder, make sure that "Any Form" is checked in the "Allow these forms in this folder” section. It was set to allow just one specific form (our custom contacts form).

We use an Outlook custom form to keep our church contacts data in Public Folders on an Exchange Server 2003. I’ve found it a bit of a trouble to update them so I’m just writing down what I have found works.

To edit a form, in Outlook go to Tools | Forms | Design a form.

I’ve found it’s important to clearly name the form to distinguish it from others. Also I record the version number on the Properties tab in the edit window, I’ve used the date as the version number.

Then to save it hit save and ignore the warning that the record is blank.

But then publish it to the organizational forms library.

To create the records in the public folder using this form, right click the folder and choose Properties. In the General tab, choose "when posting…." use Forms, navigate to the organizational forms library and choose the custom form.

Updating a custom form can be a fiddle.

Open the form from the organizational forms library, edit save and republish. Sometimes you need to then update the cached copy of the form on a local computer.

To do this choose the Forms tab in the folder’s properties option. The Manage button and then clear cache. I also check the the local copy (on the right hand side of the window) is up to date.

I’ve often gone around in circles at this point. The left hand side is the organizational forms library. I added the text to the left of the Set button, in Exchange server: Folders | Public folders | right click and choose View system folders and then edit the EFORMS REGESTRY folder name to something recognisable.

Or maybe there is a better way!!

I knew how to put a flash animation into PowerPoint, and now I’m concentrating on such things for a Sunday, it turns out the same principle works for FLV files too.

So this is what you do in PP 2007, similar in 2003.

1. Download and install VideoLAN VLC player on your computer. I’m a big fan of VideoLAN: http://www.videolan.org/

2. Download FLV Video from YouTube or other video sharing web sites: http://www.savevid.com/ is an easy way of doing this. Rename the FLV video to something unique, e.g. name.flv. The most important is that the downloaded video can be played back normally. So try it now.

3. Find the Control Toolbox in PowerPoint. Click Office button ->PowerPoint Options -> Popular -> tick "Show Developer tab in the Ribbon".

5. Right click the area you drew and go to Properties tab, and manually complete the value of attribute "MRL" with the full path of the YouTube Flash video file, e.g C:\Temp\2008\name.flv, then close the tab. Now the YouTube Flash video on your hard drive is ready to play in your presentation.

Firefox includes a built in spell checker. However, by default this does not check when typing into a single line entry box (e.g. the comments box on Facebook or the Google search box).

Firefox Inline Spell checking example

How to make Firefox spellchecker check for spelling errors inline

Open a Firefox window

Type about:config into the address bar and press enter:

Accept any warning to continue

On the next page

type the layout.spellcheckDefault in the filter field

Double click the integer value 1

Enter an integer value of 2

Click OK to accept the new setting:

That’s all there is to it. Next time you run Firefox and begin typing into a single line form field (or multiline) spell checker will check your spelling for mistyping’s as you type.
